Death of a musahar due to starvation/ hunger
Name of the person who died due to hunger: Kammal Musahar.
Address: musahar hamlet of village sarsanwa, block Harahuwa of district Varanasi.
Background information: I had informed by my director that in sarsanwa village there is case of hunger/ starvation in the morning of 28th October 2007, I decided for fact finding and I talked with my director Dr. Lenin about the case and I visited the village.

What I seen there? When we reached the musahar hamlet of aforesaid villa
ge I heard a woman is crying there, then I thought that victim is passes away, then I saw that victims’ son carrying the dead body of his father outside of the home. I shocked when I saw the dead body of kammal. His body converted like skeleton having only skin. When I entered his home there were no any single grain and no any other eatable things. Then I start talking with other victims.

Lalai: He said that I demanded many times for ration card with village head and I gave my photograph to him but he didn’t issued any ration card. I am making leaf plates and also collecting wood and I sold it to the villagers and some time when I got work in farm fields I worked there but it was very less for our survival that’s why sometime I went to other places for work seasonally. My father was not ill he died because of lack of food. Now days we doesn’t have money for food. I took loans from the moneylender and other villagers for our survival. I have liability of nearby 10,000 rupees. Today I don’t have any paisa. Then I said how you arrange the burial ceremony of your father? Then he said I will take loan by the villagers and if I am not getting loan I will put the dead body in front of temple then there the villagers will donate me some rupees for burial ceremony. I saw he takes 10 rupees from his neighbor for buying incense stick.
Sunita: She told me that today we don’t have any food and I use to go school daily with empty stomach and there I got mid day meal. My grand father died because of hunger. In my home many times we don’t have food, regularly we had only one time food.
Mani ram: he is neighborer of Kammal he belongs from other backward caste. He told that kammal died due to starvation if he had ration card and he got grains from PDS shop he might be not died, due to weakness he was unable to work. Some times he used to beg food in the village. The village head is not treating with him positively many times he tried to get ration card but the village head didn’t issued.
Village head: he said that kammal never came to me for ration card and I don’t have any information about him. I am hearing by you people that he died, if I had information I must help him. Within couple of days I will provide him red ration card. Earlier he may have ration card and may be he lost somewhere. Kammal is not living in the village regularly, for his stomach he used to visit other places.
